There's some new stuff here....I have been adding posts that I previous only recorded in my journal in a effort to fill in some blank spots from the past six months...I intend to try to keep up with this little man's comings and goings - if that is possible! Enjoy...

Book Lover

Silas's interest in books has amped up in the past few weeks. It's like he has a whole new level of attention span. He can sit and look through an entire book, make the sounds of the animals, flip back and forth between the pages. We spend every evening at bedtime looking at his favorites while Daddy reads to Willow. His favorites are board books: Carl, Eric Carl, books with photos of babies, everyday objects etc and any books illustrated by the Plasticine artist Barbara Read...he just loves her illustrations!

Dress Up Days

Silas, the long winter days of your toddlerhood spent indoors are actually pretty fun. Dress up is a favorite game. Watching you wiggle in and out of these costumes, doing up the zippers, helping little hands and feet through the right holes. It is precious beyond precious.

14 Months!

Silas laughs hysterically sometimes. He loves to rip off his diaper - it makes him giggle and grin. He has amazing hand eye coordination. He takes the caps off felt pens and puts them back on....but I always keep an eye on him because inevitably those felts go straight into his mouth. He always seems to have a goose-egg or a bruise or a purple lump somewhere on his head from bumping and falling throughout the day. He screams from hurt feelings, like having his sister take a toy away, or from being told 'No' sometimes.
He is totally adoreable and handsome and beautiful. Random people everywhere comment on his epic cuteness - the gorgeous color of his eyes, the perfect shape of his head, the sweetness of his blonde, wispy hair. I am his Mom, what can I do but beam inside and casually comment "yeah...". I am so tired these days. He nurses all night long. The weeks pass by in a blur.....

Last night Silas and I played a game of put-the-toys-in-the-bag together. It was great to see his proud smiles as he got the wooden puzzle pieces in. He has a stuffy, runny nose right noe and I can hear him snorfling as he nurses. He has been pushing kitchen chairs accross the room to gain acces to the countertops and their contents - of course bringing about an exciting new phase of alertness being required from Mom and Dad. He has amazing fine motor skills and interest in using is hands. Any object that contains something is of interest to him right now: boxes with lids, bags, purses, wallets, tins etc. Nothing is safe from his exploring little fingers. I could follow him around all day long, picking up the colossal mess left in the wake of his exploration storm....and I do!

13 Months!

Silas is 'talking' much more these days. His new word is "Wow!" And he is saying many more syllables and sounds - always with his incredible eye contact to communicate. And always the laughter. Now he is starting some of those 'special' toddler habits such as whopping me in the face with a hard plastic toy and laughing hysterically. Charming. One thing about Silas, he can climb and boy, can he take a tumble. It does scare me a little bit to think of what will happen when his world of exploration expands beyond the couch and the semi soft landings of the living room floor. I guess it is the ideal space for him to figure out how to really get around. He is literally unstoppable. When he is on one of these missions, don't even try to tell him 'no'. He is already perfecting those throw-your-head-back-and-scream reations to being steered in any direction contrary to his vision. I can only imagine the tantrums that this firey Leo is bound to come up with in the future. I thank my luck stars that for the most part, he is an easy going and happy little guy. For his less serious offences, when being told in my sing song voice, "No-no-noh!" he will react with a silly, open mouthed grin. He does, however, get pretty sad when he doesn't have me at his disposal 24-7 and I do feel for Adam on the evenings when I work at the library. I hear the stories after of his wailing and tears and sobbing as Daddy patiently coaxes him into sleep.....but at least he does get there.

Little Tux Man

I think it's pretty safe to say that Silas was the cutest little man at Will and Care's wedding....of course I am not biased at all. I kind of have mixed opinions about dressing babies up in 'adult' type clothing. In the case of leather motorcycle jackets I think it is completely ridiculous. However, in the case of baby formal wear, this little number looked so sweet!

Birthday Party!

It is safe to say that he is a social creature....and what a blessing that is! His favorite #1 playmate is big sister Willow. You follow her every move, either with your eyes or physically. She is

Exploration in Every Moment

This exciting, eye lighting, crazy grin moment was when Silas discovered that he could paint water onto the chalkboard side of the easel and it was legible. This may have been the first time he ever picked up one of the big, fat paintbrushes that had been used earlier by Willow. Looking like such a little young, my, what a fine one-year old you have become!

One Year Old!

Silas, my dear little man, today you are one! Bleary eyed with the brain of a Mom who never quite gets enough sleep, I simply cannot believe that he is a year old. He is walking, running, climbing - does this make him a toddler? How can that be? He will always be my baby. His spirit and nature are completely amusing, pure pleasure to be around. So much makes him laugh - his eyes dance with a flame of exuberance at so many everyday things. Watching him delight in the newness of the world around him makes me feel buoyant, light. Let me tell you about his toothbrush....the day I gave it to him, and sat him down on the little stool in the bathroom, he was so happy, so completely thrilled to have something of his own, something just for him. His eyes danced. Months later, he still loves it when I give it to him to brush those six cute little teeth that he worked so hard to cut.

I always want to remember that mischevious giggle, that sunshine filled grin. Many times when I am nursing, that look will pop into his eyes...a grin, a slight nibble and me saying a warning, "nooooooo" sends him inot giggles and laughter. He often laughs when I say 'no', which is scary. I wonder what the future holds....? His laughter is often couple with some juicy, raspberry type 'thhhhhh' sound that makes me smile. He is very interested in talking, making sounds, and I can hear a few distinct words from him: 'Mama, Dada, down'. When people come and go, he always waves goodbye, bobbing a wiggly wristed hand up and down. Sometimes he can be shy when he is in my arms. Enjoying the world from the safety of this vantage point. Tilting his head, leaning his cheek into my chest - always with a smile, never a tear. He is a charmer and I think he really likes people. He is naturally outgoing...silly, enjoying the smiling responses that he creates. Lately, in the evenings, he has been staying up late. Playing, babbling loudly, making all kinds of sounds and syllables - none of which make sense to me. I think he loves this time. A chance to play unobstructed by Willow. A chance to rule the roost. I treasure this quiet time...I love the chance to spend this special, calm time with him - just the two of us. Silas, my precious son, I love you and today I am celebrating you and the amazing gift that you are to me. Happy First Birthday, Little Man.

Vroom Vroom

Here's one of those precious little tidbits of Mr. Silas's emerging personality: he makes a 'vroom vroom' sound when he is playing with trucks and cars...and no, I did not teach him that. His acute observation skills picked that one up all on his own!

A Fond Goodbye

...Silas sure learned how to go with the flow on this Epic West Coast Journey. He is completely content as we enjoy our gelato and mentally prepared for the two day driving extravaganza that awaits us. I think it is pretty safe to say that he has become a seasoned traveller. I predict many an epic journey with him.

Making Friends

Silas had a great time being a part of the gang of kids that was roaming around and playing. Here, he is taking Parker and Willow for a ride. And here is Liam and Silas sharing some baby bonding time together. He is an incredibly social guy, joining into any kind of play with a huge smile and tons of enthusiasm. I guess he takes after him Mom.....

The Real Thing!

....and you thought that the first beach was awesome....Galiano, with it's pristine sand and warm water was the perfect playground for any little hands. Silas had his first look at starfish and his first real dip in the salty water.
