There's some new stuff here....I have been adding posts that I previous only recorded in my journal in a effort to fill in some blank spots from the past six months...I intend to try to keep up with this little man's comings and goings - if that is possible! Enjoy...

14 Months!

Silas laughs hysterically sometimes. He loves to rip off his diaper - it makes him giggle and grin. He has amazing hand eye coordination. He takes the caps off felt pens and puts them back on....but I always keep an eye on him because inevitably those felts go straight into his mouth. He always seems to have a goose-egg or a bruise or a purple lump somewhere on his head from bumping and falling throughout the day. He screams from hurt feelings, like having his sister take a toy away, or from being told 'No' sometimes.
He is totally adoreable and handsome and beautiful. Random people everywhere comment on his epic cuteness - the gorgeous color of his eyes, the perfect shape of his head, the sweetness of his blonde, wispy hair. I am his Mom, what can I do but beam inside and casually comment "yeah...". I am so tired these days. He nurses all night long. The weeks pass by in a blur.....

Last night Silas and I played a game of put-the-toys-in-the-bag together. It was great to see his proud smiles as he got the wooden puzzle pieces in. He has a stuffy, runny nose right noe and I can hear him snorfling as he nurses. He has been pushing kitchen chairs accross the room to gain acces to the countertops and their contents - of course bringing about an exciting new phase of alertness being required from Mom and Dad. He has amazing fine motor skills and interest in using is hands. Any object that contains something is of interest to him right now: boxes with lids, bags, purses, wallets, tins etc. Nothing is safe from his exploring little fingers. I could follow him around all day long, picking up the colossal mess left in the wake of his exploration storm....and I do!

13 Months!

Silas is 'talking' much more these days. His new word is "Wow!" And he is saying many more syllables and sounds - always with his incredible eye contact to communicate. And always the laughter. Now he is starting some of those 'special' toddler habits such as whopping me in the face with a hard plastic toy and laughing hysterically. Charming. One thing about Silas, he can climb and boy, can he take a tumble. It does scare me a little bit to think of what will happen when his world of exploration expands beyond the couch and the semi soft landings of the living room floor. I guess it is the ideal space for him to figure out how to really get around. He is literally unstoppable. When he is on one of these missions, don't even try to tell him 'no'. He is already perfecting those throw-your-head-back-and-scream reations to being steered in any direction contrary to his vision. I can only imagine the tantrums that this firey Leo is bound to come up with in the future. I thank my luck stars that for the most part, he is an easy going and happy little guy. For his less serious offences, when being told in my sing song voice, "No-no-noh!" he will react with a silly, open mouthed grin. He does, however, get pretty sad when he doesn't have me at his disposal 24-7 and I do feel for Adam on the evenings when I work at the library. I hear the stories after of his wailing and tears and sobbing as Daddy patiently coaxes him into sleep.....but at least he does get there.

Little Tux Man

I think it's pretty safe to say that Silas was the cutest little man at Will and Care's wedding....of course I am not biased at all. I kind of have mixed opinions about dressing babies up in 'adult' type clothing. In the case of leather motorcycle jackets I think it is completely ridiculous. However, in the case of baby formal wear, this little number looked so sweet!

It is safe to say that he is a social creature....and what a blessing that is! His favorite #1 playmate is big sister Willow. You follow her every move, either with your eyes or physically. She is

Exploration in Every Moment

This exciting, eye lighting, crazy grin moment was when Silas discovered that he could paint water onto the chalkboard side of the easel and it was legible. This may have been the first time he ever picked up one of the big, fat paintbrushes that had been used earlier by Willow. Looking like such a little young, my, what a fine one-year old you have become!

One Year Old!

Silas, my dear little man, today you are one! Bleary eyed with the brain of a Mom who never quite gets enough sleep, I simply cannot believe that he is a year old. He is walking, running, climbing - does this make him a toddler? How can that be? He will always be my baby. His spirit and nature are completely amusing, pure pleasure to be around. So much makes him laugh - his eyes dance with a flame of exuberance at so many everyday things. Watching him delight in the newness of the world around him makes me feel buoyant, light. Let me tell you about his toothbrush....the day I gave it to him, and sat him down on the little stool in the bathroom, he was so happy, so completely thrilled to have something of his own, something just for him. His eyes danced. Months later, he still loves it when I give it to him to brush those six cute little teeth that he worked so hard to cut.

I always want to remember that mischevious giggle, that sunshine filled grin. Many times when I am nursing, that look will pop into his eyes...a grin, a slight nibble and me saying a warning, "nooooooo" sends him inot giggles and laughter. He often laughs when I say 'no', which is scary. I wonder what the future holds....? His laughter is often couple with some juicy, raspberry type 'thhhhhh' sound that makes me smile. He is very interested in talking, making sounds, and I can hear a few distinct words from him: 'Mama, Dada, down'. When people come and go, he always waves goodbye, bobbing a wiggly wristed hand up and down. Sometimes he can be shy when he is in my arms. Enjoying the world from the safety of this vantage point. Tilting his head, leaning his cheek into my chest - always with a smile, never a tear. He is a charmer and I think he really likes people. He is naturally outgoing...silly, enjoying the smiling responses that he creates. Lately, in the evenings, he has been staying up late. Playing, babbling loudly, making all kinds of sounds and syllables - none of which make sense to me. I think he loves this time. A chance to play unobstructed by Willow. A chance to rule the roost. I treasure this quiet time...I love the chance to spend this special, calm time with him - just the two of us. Silas, my precious son, I love you and today I am celebrating you and the amazing gift that you are to me. Happy First Birthday, Little Man.

Vroom Vroom

Here's one of those precious little tidbits of Mr. Silas's emerging personality: he makes a 'vroom vroom' sound when he is playing with trucks and cars...and no, I did not teach him that. His acute observation skills picked that one up all on his own!

A Fond Goodbye

...Silas sure learned how to go with the flow on this Epic West Coast Journey. He is completely content as we enjoy our gelato and mentally prepared for the two day driving extravaganza that awaits us. I think it is pretty safe to say that he has become a seasoned traveller. I predict many an epic journey with him.

Making Friends

Silas had a great time being a part of the gang of kids that was roaming around and playing. Here, he is taking Parker and Willow for a ride. And here is Liam and Silas sharing some baby bonding time together. He is an incredibly social guy, joining into any kind of play with a huge smile and tons of enthusiasm. I guess he takes after him Mom.....

The Real Thing!

....and you thought that the first beach was awesome....Galiano, with it's pristine sand and warm water was the perfect playground for any little hands. Silas had his first look at starfish and his first real dip in the salty water.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

A wonderful day spent at Stanley Park, re-visiting the place that five years ago we tied the knot...with our two kids in tow! And today, Silas saw for the first time, the vast and beautiful Pacific Ocean. From the vantage point of second beach, he dug through the sand, picking up shells and tasting the salt. The waves lapped up onto his little feet. He loved it completely.

Having fun in East Van

After three days driving in the car, it is easy to see the relief and joy on the face of our little guy hanging out in our favorite East Vancouver park, Trout Lake. The wading pool, the picnic in the shade and meeting his little cousin Jasmine was making Silas smile!

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Well, yesterday we hit the road for the West Coast. It's gonna take a few days to get there 'cause we are just taking our time. Here is a picture from our brief little stop in Enderby. Dad and Silas are enjoying a few rays. So far, Silas is a great traveller, mostly snoozing or generally being entertained by staring out the window or watching his older sister while in the car.

Wagon Rides

Silas and Annelie enjoy a little wagon-ride action in the backyard. This week I am teaching kids clay clasees in the mornings while Liz watches the three little rugrats...then afternoons she teaches and I've got them....It's definitely a handful....I think we'll stick to two!

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Silas, when I look at him and watch him I want to make more babies! He is so completely awesome! To watch him and WIllow interact is hilarious. His eyes are on her all the time, carefully watching her every move. Sometimes I see him rubbernecking just to be sure he doesn't miss a thing. And her reaction? Always "Silas, No!" and his reaction? Always smiles, more curiousity, sometimes a sad face. But always, his eyes are on her. He is mastering so many of his toys: the pounding ball boat is one of his favorites. He smashes and bangs to his hearts content. Today he was obsessively watching Willow play 'fruit tea'. She was putting different plastic fruits in tea cups. He was mesmerized...he began to get to work at putting the little lids on the pots and pans. He looks at books, turning the pages an flipping them all around....oh, and the pointing....That little finger is just pointing at everything in the world around him while he says 'dat' or a big juicy 'thsst'.

Oh, the things you do....

Silas can clap his hands and wave bye- bye. All this happened in the past week. Grandma was witness to his first un-prompted bye-bye wave...or hand bob as it could be affectionately termed. he is sanding unaided and walking 2, 3, 4 steps at a will be mere moments until he is up and running!

Father's Day!

I do keep a terrible scrawly record. Busy Daze. We made Father's Day special with a pancake breakfast and a new ice cream maker for our favorite Dad. Adam course worked through out the day. I popped in and out exchanging sleepy babes for awake ones while he held the fort. (It's enjoyable to spend time with each of them alone) Grandma took us all out for a lovely supper at the Thai Orchid Room. Willow was feeling tired and hurt after her injury at Redcliff days...Silas was all dapper and social as per his usual little self. It was a sweet, but busy Sunday.

10 Months!

This weekend Silas really made some headway on his quest to walk. It's true he has been standing and taking a few little steps for the past week. But now it seems that walking is what he wants. We were hanging around outside in the back yard so it was the perfect environment for him to practice. He perfected the stand to squat and the squat to stand unassisted. I can see how strong his little legs are already....and the look of determination in his eyes shines like fire. It is very funny and so cute to watch him do this, making grunts and squatting, sumo wrestler style. The perfect position for exploring the sprinkler. He was fine while doing this position, checking out the gurgling water with his hands. The problems came when curiousity got the better of him and he tried to crawl through the sprinkler. He got about halfway in, with water squirting into his face and everywhere. Too deep in to turn back and too far to go to make it through he did something he rarely does...he called out in a panicky, squealy cry of terror...."HELP HELP, I am getting soaked!" Of course I was right there and scooped up my little soaker immediately. I know that my little guy is on the verge of walking...and when that happens running will follow closely. I can't believe that he is such a mover and shaker. I just want to keep him close and savor every moment of this far too quickly passing baby age.

The Measles Gong Show...

The past few days have been an absolute gong show. I got a little concerned about my little guy when I saw a rash begin to appear in Silas's cheeks on Sunday. I thought that maybe he had gotten a little too much sun, or maybe had red cheeks from the teething. The following day, it seemed to be spreading on his body. I became more worried and brought him to the Doctor that day. She took a quick look at him, no more than 4 minutes and declared that he has the measles. I was shocked. I guess that kids don't get their immunizations for measles until 12 month, and there had been a few reported cases in Calgary. Still, how could he have the measles??? My doctor lamely told me to give his tylenol if he got a fever and sent me home with no instructions, tests etc. The following morning I called the community health nurse who does my kids immunizations and she was very very surprised to hear the Doctor's diagnosis, especially with no tests having been done. She told me that the likelihood of it being the measles was very low, but they wanted me to bring him into the hospital to perform the tests. At the hospital they took every precaution including air tight quarantine, face shields, full gowns etc. My mom and I felt rather underdressed! I repeated several times to the nurses that I really didn't think that he had the measles. One nurse even commented on the fact that he didn't look like a sick guy....the rash he had cleared up completely overnight. Still they drew blood (painful) and swabbed deep deep in his nose (traumatic)and taped a bag to his bits to get a pee sample (uncomfortable). The drama of this ordeal was amped up because of the quarantine precautions that needed to be taken. We had been planning a trip to Edmonton on the upcoming weekend for a reunion with some of my old girlfriends and their kids/babies and I was now being told that we had to cancel our trip. Well, I wasn't going to have that, especially when I doubted so strongly that he even had the measles at all. I spent the following days on the phone with community health nurses, Doctors and all of the parents of the kids that Silas had been in contact with over the past days and weeks. I was busy and stressful and in the end we got the ok to go away as even if he were sick, we would have been through the contagious stage by that point. I was so glad that we didn't cancel the trip...sure enough as we were on our way driving to Edmonton, we got a call from the Doctor and the test results showed that it wasn't the measles. What an ordeal! But I was happy to know that Silas had a clean bill of health and that my Mommy intuition was still bang on.

First Birthday Party

Silas got to experience his first kids birthday party tonight at Donovan's second birthday....and his first taste of watermelon.... he really seemed to love both!

Nine Months!

I know, I take a lot of 'swing' shots...but it is the perfect picture taking opportunity - my hands are free and he is filed with huge smiles! I am trying so hard to be a record keeper of sorts...even if it is mainly images. It is difficult to find the time to try to capture these busy times. But I love these times, I love them with all my heart. Silas, my little buddy, has been having a very rough time these past couple days. A fever, nothing too serious, has been plaguing him as two more teeth painfully work their way through his pinks gums....on the top. He nurses and sleeps his way through the days and nights right now....his attachment to me has seemingly increased ten fold. He has grown leaps and bounds in the past weeks. Here he is, poised on the last remaining edge of true babyhood - walking. once those first steps are taken we will be snowballing into toddlerhood at speeds faster than I can imagine. I savour his need for me. I surrender to it. Being a food provider is a monumental task and I love it. Silas is so wonderfully content to sit in my lap, to play, to see the world from the safe, comfy vantage point of my lap...and I am thrilled to hold him here as long as he wills it.

Addy and Silas

It is great to see that even at such a young age, this little guy is very social - he is always honing the suave skills on his favorite girlfriend, Addison. Here are the two of them chilling in the backyard. They had a busy day hanging out together at parent link and having a backyard play date.

Mother's Day

Silas's first Mother's Day...Dad was teaching him the ropes. It was certainly my busiest, most tiring Mother's Day yet. Some things (like babies) just don't ever stop. But also very special. Adam made an amazing, never to be forgotten, lemon pie. And my Mom made us a lovely feast. A walk in the park and a special morning of pancakes and presents made it a completely enjoyable day!

Little Cruiser....

I pulled out Willow's old 'pusher'. I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner but maybe it's a good thing that I didn't. The moment I gave it to him, he was off. He looked so happy and thrilled with himself...I had to run to grab my camera.

8 Months

Of course, everything is still going into that cute little mouth...leather shoes seems to be one of the very favs. The time is flying and he is growing and changing so much. He giggles and laughs when I tickle his tummy and cries and gets frustrated when we take things away from him that are not baby appropriate - he wants to explore everything! I am glad that I can still manage to take pictures because it all really seems to be passing in a least we will have a photo documentation of this little guys's babyhood as it goes whizzing by!

Today Silas's second top tooth appeared. Now that little grin looks a lot different. I hope that having these two biggies cut through now will help this guys settled down to sleep a bit better. He has really been munching at the All Nite Milkies Diner so much the past few nights...Mom could really use some sleep!
